The Persian is the classic lap cat โ long coat, flat face, calm temperament. It's also one of the more expensive cats to keep well, and almost none of that is the purchase price. Our cost-of-owning-a-cat guide puts a typical cat at $15,000โ$30,000 over a lifetime; a Persian sits at the top of that band because of two things you can't opt out of: the coat and the face.
What actually drives the cost
- Daily grooming. The dense coat mats within a couple of days if it isn't brushed. Owners who keep up do it free at home; most still pay for a professional groom or sanitary/lion trim a few times a year at $70โ$120 a visit.
- The flat face. Brachycephalic anatomy means constant tear-duct overflow (daily face-wiping), crowded teeth that trap disease, and sometimes genuine breathing trouble. It turns routine care into slightly-more-than-routine care, every year.
- Inherited disease. PKD is the headline risk โ see below.
The health conditions to budget for
Persians are one of the more medically involved cat breeds. Every cost below is pulled from our master condition table, so it matches the rest of the site rather than being invented here.
| Health condition | Typical U.S. cost |
|---|---|
| Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) | $1,000โ$3,000 / year once kidneys decline |
| Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) | $1,000โ$3,000 / year later in life |
| Entropion (eyelid) surgery | $500โ$1,500 per eye |
| Tooth resorption | $500โ$1,500 per cleaning |
Buying vs. adopting
A kitten from a PKD-testing breeder typically runs $1,000โ$3,000, higher for show or traditional "doll-face" lines (whose less-extreme faces, incidentally, tend to have fewer breathing and tearing problems). Adoption is far cheaper โ often $75โ$150 โ and Persians turn up in shelters and breed rescues regularly, sometimes surrendered by owners who underestimated the daily grooming. Paying a tested breeder up front is the cheapest insurance against the priciest condition on this page.

Our calculator folds routine care, grooming, and the odds of a big vet bill into one lifetime number.
Should you insure one?
Persians make a stronger-than-average insurance case: PKD and HCM are both chronic and expensive, and the flat face invites recurring dental and eye bills. The rule doesn't change โ enroll while the cat is young and healthy, because a kidney or heart diagnosis becomes a pre-existing exclusion the moment it's on the record. Our pet-insurance guide runs the break-even math.
